“From the British Columbian perspective, this is a huge priority. We need this bill passed.”
The key change would shift the onus from prosecutors to the lawyers for the accused in persuading judges that violent, repeat offenders were entitled to bail.
“I don’t think it will be acceptable to anybody from any political party if this bill becomes a political football or gets stuck in the Senate.”Which is not to say that Bill C-48 was stalled by inter-party squabbling.Rather, when parliament adjourned Wednesday of this week, the federal government had not yet called the bill for second reading, the first stage of debate.
He expressed particular dismay that the federal government chose not to proceed with bail reform despite “broad agreements among the parties that it is important, that they support it, that they want this reform to take place.The Eby government faltered in its own attempt to toughen bail provisions. The B.C. premier said Thursday he has been given no explanation for why C-48 wasn’t called for debate following its introduction five weeks ago.
