Something had to be done to make the numbers look better. So they went to work, overstating, conflating and otherwise fudging the count.
Getting more creative, the New Democrats added in the 21,000 homes that were supposedly added to the rental market by owners seeking to escape paying the provincial speculation and vacancy tax. Either way, the province had nothing to do with building the units that were the imputed product of the speculation and vacancy tax. They were included in the count, nevertheless.
The results were on display in Monday’s release of the “progress report on our housing targets” for the first five years of the 2018 housing plan. The creative accounting didn’t stop Premier David Eby from declaring “we are on track to meet our target of 114,000 units 10 years ago and go beyond that.”
The projection is also dependent on the passage of three new pieces of legislation: a flipping tax, a measure to legalize secondary suites province wide, and a bill to override single family zoning to permit development of multi-unit townhouses, duplexes and triplexes.Article content
