The prosecutor’s office initially investigated the possibility the vandalism at at Church of the Redeemer in Morristown was a bias incident.

The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office investigated the possibility the vandalism was a bias incident, as the sign was near rainbow flags set up outside of the church.

“It was determined the vandalism does not meet the criteria to be a bias-based or hate crime as the evidence established an intent only to damage property,” Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll said in a statement. Carroll said investigators obtained surveillance photos of several people walking east on South Street near the church, with some in the group hitting and damaging signs before they entered two vehicles parked on Dumont Place.

One of the suspects saw a photo of himself released through the CrimeStoppers program and turned himself into police, Carroll said.“Subsequent investigation concluded that charges were not warranted for the other individuals,” the prosecutor said.
