A graffiti artist living in the Downtown Eastside celebrated his 54th birthday Saturday by having it proclaimed an official holiday by Vancouver\u0027s city council.

James Hardy, the graffiti artist known as Smokey Devil, stands with his son after attending a city proclamation that declared March 11, 2023 as Smokey D. DayThe proclamation states that Hardy’s murals have gotten vital public service announcements to the DTES’ homeless and “those who have little access to computers and phones.”

“I want Vancouver to see that just because people living in the DTES have problems, it doesn’t make us bad people,” Hardy said. “It’s the same with graffiti — it can be something other than a crime.”Article content “He was in so much pain carrying the weight of losing somebody close to him. He went out to paint a memorial piece for this person and had an epiphany — he realized that this was what he was supposed to do,” said Trey Helten, a co-founder of the DTES Artist Collective.
