Abbott on Wednesday, Aug. 31 pushed back on calls by Uvalde families for new gun control measures in Texas, saying that raising the minimum age to purchase weapons like the one used in the Robb Elementary School massacre would be “unconstitutional.
With all 14 Uvalde precincts reporting, Abbott unofficially received 60.27% of the vote versus 31.55% for O’Rourke. Abbott carried the county, which is still reeling from the Robb Elementary School mass shooting where 21 people were killed.Abbott has carried Uvalde in both of his previous elections. In 2018, he won Uvalde by 1,700 votes over Democrat Lupe Valdez. In 2014, in his first run for governor, Abbott defeated Sen. Wendy Davis by 800 votes.
