UTSA working through quick turnaround for Friday’s Conference USA opener at Middle Tennessee
Texas Southern running back Chaunzavia Lewis is brought down in the back field by UTSA linebacker Donyai Taylor during the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game. With a short week to prepare for Friday’s Conference USA opener and the disappointment from Saturday’s performance lingering, coach Jeff Traylor rallied the Roadrunners for a rare Sunday practice.
Physicality on defense, one of the three legs of UTSA’s “Triangle of Toughness” culture, was lacking Saturday, Traylor said, with poor tackling allowing Texas Southern to rack up 464 total yards. “Either the guys don’t know what they’re talking about picking the spread, or our guys let that affect the way they prepared and played,” Traylor said. “I would say it had more to do with the way we prepared and played.”
“If we’re 0-4 or 4-0, it doesn’t matter,” Traylor said. “You have to go get this one, and we couldn’t be a worse time for us to play a Friday night game with the way our injury situation is right now. But we’ve got to find a way to get back on that plane Friday night. If it’s 3-2, 7-6, or 68-67.” The Roadrunners were also without running back Trelon Smith and defensive tackles Joe Evans and Brandon Matterson during Saturday’s game.
