UTSA wins second straight Conference USA championship, taking down North Texas
UTSA Coach Jeff Taylor gives a thumbs down Friday night, Dec. 2, 2022 at the Alamodome to a referee during the C-USA championship game.As UTSA was marching toward the start of the 2022 season, coach Jeff Traylor asked the Roadrunners a question that grew to become familiar: “Are we built to last, or are we a flash in the pan?”
“We’ve heard a lot of those comments. We’re a flash in the pan. We can’t sustain this,” Traylor said days before UTSA’s 2022 opener. “The only way you prove them wrong is by going out and stacking your third great year together.” Zakhari Franklin hauled in 10 catches for 144 yards and three touchdowns — a new record for scoring receptions in a Conference USA championship game. Franklin’s 13 touchdown grabs this season are also a Roadrunners’ single-season record.
The Roadrunners compiled 571 yards to finish just 19 shy of a season-high, scoring on eight of their first 11 drives before running out the clock on the 12th.
