UTSA women’s basketball finding signs of progress through Karen Aston’s first season

Arriving at UTSA with a pedigree as the second-winningest coach in Texas Longhorns history during a tenure that spanned 2012-20, Aston has learned to find “small victories” with a Roadrunners group that was picked to finish last in Conference USA. The Roadrunners this year have trimmed that deficit to an average scoring margin of -12.1 in C-USA games, remaining more competitive through a focus on defense and rebounding.
“Our chemistry is definitely way better than what it was at the beginning of the year,” Pimentel said. “We’re starting to understand our plays more thoroughly, and we’re taking coaching way better than what we were at the beginning, too.” Pimentel worked to develop into a leader this season, but she admits being a vocal presence is not something that comes naturally.
