The Utah Poison Control Center has reported a more than 600% increase in calls related to a popular weight loss drug.

In recent months, there has been a spike in demand for Ozempic , or semaglutide, due to its weight loss benefits, which has led to shortages.
"We've seen an increase — about a 600% increase in calls reported to us," said Amberly Johnson, director of the Utah Poison Control Center.Johnson said many of the calls stem from individuals mistakenly taking the wrong dose of the compounded version of semaglutide. Since 2020, Poison Control has seen over 300 cases related to these drugs, with more than 100 occurring in 2024. 28% of the cases result in hospitalization.Pharmacist Akram Refaat of Jolley’s Compounding Pharmacy in Salt Lake County explained that some individuals mistakenly believe that taking a higher dose will result in faster weight loss.
