The University of Texas at Arlington issued a statement Wednesday acknowledging that the university stands on land once owned by American Indian people.The University of Texas at Arlington has issued a statement acknowledging that the university’s campus stands on land once owned by the Wichita tribe and its affiliated tribes.
“Their ancestors resided here for generations before being forcibly displaced by U.S. settlers and soldiers in the mid-1800s,” the statement reads. A university task force comprised of faculty, staff and students — many who claim American Indian ancestry — developed the statement, according to aTask force member Les Riding In, assistant dean in UTA’s College of Liberal Arts, said the land acknowledgement statement is a “call to action.”
