The trial begins today for the man charged with arson in relation to the fire that destroyed multi-billion-dollar vessel USS Bonhomme Richard. Seaman Recruit Ryan Sawyer Mays faces charges of aggravated arson and willful hazarding of a vessel. Full story:

SAN DIEGO – The Navy announced Wednesday, Sept. 14 that the man charged with arson in relation to the 2020 fire of the USS Bonhomme Richard would stand trial starting Sept. 19.

Seaman Recruit Ryan Sawyer Mays faces charges of aggravated arson and willful hazarding of a vessel, however Mays denies starting the fire. The Navy says the fire led to the scrapping of one-billion dollars worth of material in a fire that lasted four days. If convicted, Mays could face life in prison.
