Safety plans on being first team All-Pioneer League this season after being shunned
When the 2021 All-Pioneer Football League honors were released, University of San Diego safety Hunter Nichols became irate. After being named Co-Special Teams Player of the Year the previous season, plus earning first team defense honors, Nichols only received honorable mention defensive recognition last season.“I should have kept it and put it on a wall or a door so I could see it every day,” he said.
“He was real good in the classroom, respectful, set an example by his work ethic in the weight room, displayed leadership,” said former Calabasas head coach Casey Clausen, now the head coach at Bishop Alemany.On a Calabasas team that featured more than half a dozen scholarship players, Nichols got strung along by colleges. Cornell made a house call. He took an official visit to Penn.
He has seven career interceptions, plus returns kicks, averaging 26.8 yards on kickoff returns in the spring 2021 season.“You’re looking at the ball while everyone’s screaming, running at you,” he said. “I think you just have to put fear aside, have no care in the world for those six seconds. I love it. I still have the receiver blood in me. I just want the ball in my hands.”
