USD's Earlington pivots from portal, stays with Toreros
Earlington will be a fifth-year senior with one year of eligibility. Earlington, who averaged 13.2 points and 6.7 rebounds on last season’s 15-16 team, entered the portal after Steve Lavin was named head coach last month. He visited one school, Colorado State.
“With the coaching change I wanted to just weigh my options,” said Earlington, a 6-foot-6, 240-pound forward who played three seasons at St. John’s. “Obviously, I’ve been leaving that door to come back.Earlington’s decision to return to USD was first reported by Jon Rothstein of College Hoops Today.Before entering the portal, Earlington had the chance to participate in workouts run by Lavin.
“He’s a proven coach, he’s a winning coach,” said Earlington. “I feel he’s going to bring a winning culture here.”“Naturally, we’re pleased that Marcellus will finish his college degree and playing career as a Torero,” said Lavin. “His potential to become an elite defender and offensive rebounder positions him to be a key contributor for our team’s aims next season.
“Offensively, Marcellus has the skill set and versatility to attack the rim and put opponents in foul jeopardy, which is an important element in winning games.” Earlington is the second Torero to pull his name from the transfer portal. Point guard Wayne McKinney III, named to the All-WCC freshman team, also decided to return. McKinney started 20 games and averaged 6.6 points.
