US professional Kyle Smaine, 31, was mourned by his newlywed wife of just two months after being killed in an avalanche in Japan.
American professional freestyle skier and former world champion Kyle Smaine died after getting caught in an avalanche in Japan Sunday, his newlywed wife has confirmed.
Kyle Smaine was skiing down a slope on Mount Hakuba in Japan when another skier triggered an avalanche Sunday. Japanese weather authorities had issued an avalanche warning for the area, following heavy snowfall in the past few days.that they had just finished a run when a third skier in their group trigged the avalanche.“We saw it coming,” Ü told the outlet. “We heard the crack. We realized it is a big one. We started running and then we got hit.”
During his 10-year career as a competitive skier, Smaine won a gold medal in the halfpipe at the FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championships in 2015. He retired from competition in 2018.
