U.S. seizes North Korean cargo ship, cites violations of international sanctions for coal shipments.
WASHINGTON – U.S. authorities have seized one of North Korea’s largest cargo ships in connection with a scheme to illicitly export tons of coal in violation of international sanctions, according to court documents filed Thursday.
Between November 2016 and April 2018, according to court documents, the ship was used by the Korea Songi Shipping Company to export tons of coal to foreign purchasers. The shipping company allegedly financed equipment purchases and serviced the ship through “unwitting” U.S. financial institutions. U.S. law prohibits banks from providing such services to North Korean parties.
The court documents identify separate shipments of more than 26,000 metric tons of anthracite coal in November and December 2016 that were destined for Chinese ports. The latest volley of projectiles were fired Thursday from near a military base about 50 miles from North Korea's capital Pyongyang, according to South Korea's military. Few other details were immediately available.
