An investigation was launched after a woman diagnosed with HIV in 2018 disclosed having received a procedure involving needles at the spa.

An official emphasized that while the risk of infection during cosmetic procedures is generally low, individuals with concerns should undergo testing.Federal officials disclosed on Thursday that at least three women contracted HIV during cosmetic “vampire facial” treatments at an unlicensed spa in Albuquerque.

During an inspection of the spa, authorities discovered unsterile practices, including unlabeled blood tubes on a kitchen counter, blood storage alongside food in a refrigerator, and unwrapped syringes in drawers and trash bins. The CDC recommends routine testing for all adults aged 13 to 64 as part of their medical care to ensure awareness of their HIV status.

In 2018, the New Mexico Department of Health was alerted to an unusual HIV infection in a woman who had undergone the facial treatment.
