Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives will try to unite around a new speaker to lead their fractious and narrow majority on Wednesday, a week after a small group of dissidents ousted Kevin McCarthy.
so far in the closed-door, secret-ballot vote: Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who is No. 2 on the leadership ladder, and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, an outspoken leader of party's right wing.Voting is due to begin at 9 a.m. , starting what could a long and messy process to install a new speaker after a small faction of far-right Republicans deposed McCarthy last week and threw the chamber into chaos.
But some predict they will not be able to resolve their differences and unite behind a candidate quickly. Representative Ken Buck, one of the eight, said a "significant number" of Republicans could decline to vote for a candidate in Wednesday's first ballot. While McCarthy was the first speaker to be removed in a formal vote, the last two Republicans to hold the job wound up leaving under pressure from party hardliners.
Democrats backed their leader, Representative Hakeem Jeffries, during those votes and are expected to remain united behind him this time as well.
