US: Black unemployment rate spikes to 7% as labor market weakens
Unemployment, Racial Disparity, Labor Market

The unemployment rate for black workers in the United States rose sharply to 7% in September, compared to 3.6% for white workers. This widening racial gap coincides with a significant slowdown in job creation, with only 29,000 new positions added nationwide. The increase is particularly pronounced among black women and is exacerbated by layoffs in the federal government, where African Americans are overrepresented.

In the United States, the unemployment rate for black workers reached 7% in September, nearly double that of white workers. This is a long-standing fracture in the American labor market that is widening again as job creation slows sharply.

The unemployment rate for black workers jumped from 6% to 7% in a single month, while the rate for white workers remained stable at 3.6%, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This increase occurs in a labor market that is showing signs of weakness, with only 29,000 new jobs created in September and downward revisions for the previous two months.

Economists note that black workers are historically more sensitive to economic downturns and suffer higher unemployment during recessions. Additionally, layoffs in the federal government, where African Americans are overrepresented, have contributed to this increase.
