There's hope for the future, but this loss will stay for a while.

There are no two ways about the fact that this was a far cry from the kind of performance many expected from the United States, even if it was against a team as talented as its opponents were. Players were unable to commit in the final third, the back line was porous and players who were expected to play well made crucial mistakes. On this one-game sample size, the true cynics of American soccer success could claim this as proof of how far the United States is from international glory.

But optimism can still make its way into an analysis of how the USMNT performed this tournament as a whole. A majority of this team’s talent is young and has shown confidence throughout the group stages that they’re not afraid of anyone in the world. It’s a platitude that perhaps gets mentioned often, but this time more than any other period in American soccer history is that true.
