When Albania was under communist rule, the rundown weapons factory had once been used to make Russian-designed AK-47 rifles. The Gramsh plant was also used to dismantle small arms and ammunition. However as she entered the premises, Sator was arrested on suspicion of spying on Albanian abandoned factories by two army guards — along with Russian companion Mikahil Zorin and Ukranian Fedir Alpatov.
Sator was charged with espionage after her ill-fated adventure in Gramsh and the photographer has since spent nine months in an Albanian prison.According to her social media profile, it appears that she has now been released from prison. However,posted on May 28, Sator says that her “investigation [is] still pending” and there is “no final trial in which I could be fully acquitted yet.”
