CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A UPEI graduate student is trying to help a plant that is in danger of going extinct. Ryan Cheverie is working to help with ...

Cheverie has been working to map the genetic structure of the asters since 2021, determining how unique each population around the gulf is.Since 2021, Cheverie has taken numerous field trips to survey asters populations, and grown asters in different soil conditions at UPEI, all to learn more about the threatened plant and assist conservation and repopulation efforts.

During post-tropical Fiona, the single remaining population of asters, located within P.E.I. National Park was flooded. An ecosystem scientist with a wealth of knowledge on the asters, David Mazerolle has worked with UPEI and Parks Canada to conserve and study asters in the wild. According to Mazerolle, because this species is an annual, flowering and dropping seeds before the winter and then dying off, the population can fluctuate as much as the habitat can.Mazerolle detailed how asters only grow in saltwater marshes by the shore, near freshwater, which is an area threatened by coastal erosion, storm damage and climate change.
