“Last year was a bit disappointing for us, but we were a young team and I think we learned a lot,” said Panthers centre back Max VanWiechen of Montague. “This year, definitely, the goal is to make the playoffs and to make it far in the playoffs.” Despite the team’s record, one positive in 2022 was UPEI’s defensive play. The Panthers gave up fewer than two goals a game – 22 goals against in 12 games. But the Panthers only scored nine goals, which is something the team hopes to improve on.
“We didn’t recruit a lot of players, but the players we brought in are of high quality and they are going to add to our tackling ability, which is an area of the field we need to improve in,” said Page, who added the Panthers have a strong core returning on defence.
