Unlocking the key to a high quality campus Democratic engagement action plan paid civicnation
Yes, I did say be a locksmith. In my first position after graduate school, I opened a brand new residence hall. And it was during that experience that I spent a great deal of time with our campus locksmith. As we worked together in checking each lock on every door of the new building, I learned a great deal about how locks and keys work, and that it’s not all that different from creating a campus civic learning, political engagement, and voter participation action plan.
Not only did the plan adapt or adjust to various programs or activities, it also adjusted and adapted to the stakeholders we had around the table. Starting this process with only two faculty members and two staff members, we knew we needed to include more voices to bring our plan to life. Since this first meeting, our Civic Engagement Core Group has added students, additional faculty and staff members from across disciplines, and has added the perspective of community partners.
