The University Place School District has agreed to pay more than $4 million to the victims of alleged sexual abuse by a volunteer wrestling coach.

Lawyers for those students said the man’s background should have prevented him from being hired.

“We did some digging and found out that he had a criminal background for this exact same thing and he was still hired, given what we described as unfettered access to children for years,” said Ashton Dennis, a lawyer with the Washington Law Center. “The school horribly dropped the ball in allowing this man to gain access to children and to work within the district, that’s what it means,” said Vincent Nappo with the Washington Law Center.The school district is still in civil litigation with three more victims.“University Place School District’s first priority is to provide a safe and positive educational experience for all of its students. Recently, lawsuits were filed by several former students against the istrict.
