The long-awaited epicenter of student activity at UHD is the first in a series of anticipated expansions meant to give students and faculty an increased sense of belonging at the commuter campus.

students stream into the new Wellness & Success Center to exercise, eat and study with classmates on a typical weekday.

The $39 million building, which opened in late January, is one effort in UH Downtown’s plan to boost student success by building community and providing more basic services. Research on higher education institutions has repeatedly shown that fostering a so-called “sense of belonging” has a direct link to measures such as graduation and retention rates, said Cassandre Alvarado, assistant professor of practice at the University of Texas at Austin.

The university is hoping to increase its first-year retention rates to 79 percent by 2025, from 64 percent in 2020. The six-year graduation rate is a bigger lift, with a goal to increase the current rate of 30 percent to 58 percent. While enrollment has nearly doubled at UHD over the past 25 years, spatial constraints have prevented wide-scale physical expansion to accompany the increase in students.

“The real goal is to increase the footprint of the university so we can have a more cohesive kind of campus,” the president said. Designed by SmithGroup and built by Vaughn Construction, the 75,000-square-foot space is more than double the size of the old student center. The first floor contains locker rooms, laundry facilities, a bouldering wall and strength equipment; the second floor, houses cardio equipment; and the third floor is studio rooms for classes like Zumba. Three gyms also fill the north end of the building, all surrounded by a raised track.

Cameron Williams, 23 and Tombe Tombe, 19 , play basketball with friends at University of Houston Downtown’s new $39 million Wellness & Success Center the opened this semester on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023 at University of Houston Downtown in Houston, TX.So far, she’s only on campus two days a week, but Santamaria said she hopes that places like the wellness center keep her more engaged.
