United Airlines’ next CEO Scott Kirby used to count cards. Now he counts regional jets

“I congratulate Scott on this promotion; he has earned it,” Insler said. “We now look forward to working with him as CEO and building on the solid foundation put in place by Oscar.” In 2004, they engineered a merger with bankrupt US Airways. In 2016, just 14 months after that merger closed, they went after Delta and failed spectacularly. In 2008, they went after United, and were seemingly played by a United management team that preferred to merge with Continental.
Meanwhile, in 2016, the executive suite at American seemed to have grown overcrowded, largely due to the question of who might one day succeed Parker as CEO. At the end of August, Isom was named president, Kirby was asked to leave, and Munoz hired Kirby as United president.
