C.J. Goodwin is making a strong early case for his first career Pro Bowl selection, recording two of Dallas’ three special teams tackles in Arizona.
Fassel showed teammates three plays Goodwin made in three different phases of special teams. The first happened in punt coverage late in the second quarter. In a customary sign of respect from an opponent, Goodwin drew a double team as a gunner. When nudged out of bounds, he used the sideline to his technical advantage, sprinting downfield without being further impeded before turning back into play.
Goodwin eventually split his double team, sunk his hips and stopped in order to avoid overrunning the play, and cut back toward the sideline to tackle Cardinals returner Greg Dortch. His stop limited a 19-yard gain. On a third-quarter Cardinals punt, as a corner, Goodwin singled up against Arizona gunner Christian Matthew. He controlled Matthew throughout the rep, delivering the front-side block needed to seal a lane for wide receiver KaVontae Turpin’s 51-yard return.Lastly, the Cowboys’ kickoff coverage team generally sprints for the love of the game. Rookie kicker Brandon Aubrey began the season with 20 straight touchbacks. In the fourth quarter, the 21st kickoff was a live ball.
