Rutgers beat Temple, 36-7, in their second win of the year Saturday night.
Monangai finished with a career-high 165 yards on 28 carries. And he racked up 93 of those yards in the fourth quarter alone.
“One thing I can say about that running back, you guys saw a future NFL back,” Drayton said of Monangai during his Monday press conference, via. “A guy that plays on contact. But the one thing that was impressive about him is that when we missed our gap fits on defense, he found it. If it was C-gap and he was going to the left, he found that C-gap to the right. Just a hell of a player. And credit to Rutgers and that running back finding those ways to exploit our mistakes.
“We just needed a spark,” Monangai said after the win. “We knew we were going to run the ball. I got to give kudos to the guys up front. They were able to move guys for that long drive. It gets tiring being able to run the ball every play, and they were able to make those guys move and wear them out. I was just trying to read my keys, find the open hole and make an explosive play.”
Monangai was under-recruited coming out of Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey. Schiano took a flier on him, extending one of his first offers since returning to Rutgers as head coach. Now, Schiano is reaping the benefits of the running back.
