Steve Carrell appears far out of his depth playing the famously dyspeptic Vanya in a production that also stars William Jackson Harper and Anika Noni Rose.
Steve Carell stars as Vanya, with Alison Pill as Sonya, in the current Broadway revival of the Chekhov classic "Uncle Vanya" starring Steve Carell in his Broadway debut, take place in the present day, as the actor’s clothes and idiom might suggest? Presumably people weren’t referencing postmodernism and flipping the bird in Russia in the 1890s, when the play was first written.
All of which goes out the window in this undercooked revival, directed by Lila Neugebauer. The text of the play has by updated, by playwright Heidi Schreck , who presumably is trying to draw a direct line from some of Chekhov’s thematic concerns to the present-day.
