Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is expected to address the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday during the second day of the annual General Assembly in New York.
The high-profile venue — the UN’s most powerful body, where Russia is a permanent member — will offer him a platform to try to convince countries in the so-called Global South that Moscow bears responsibility for the economic instability and food insecurity they’re facing. He’s also expected to meet with Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, considered a key voice among emerging economies that have tried not to take sides.
The dispute centers on Warsaw’s ban on Ukrainian grain imports a month before an election, which has driven a wedge between the wartime allies. Paraguay is one of only 13 countries to maintain full diplomatic relations with Taiwan, the self-ruled democracy that China claims as part of its territory. “The United States of America must explain transparently and demonstrate in a verifiable fashion that it does wish to reach a proper conclusion and show her commitment and choose a way, choose a path — either JCPOA or not,” he said.
