Ukrainian military officers have been receiving tactical tank training in the UK and Germany for months, a former British Army tank commander has said
All of the battle tanks being sent are more powerful than the Soviet-era T-72s that are currently used by the Russians and Ukrainians.Lt Gen Leakey told“What’s really good news to know is that over the last, let’s say months, the Ukrainian officers have been in training both in the UK and in Germany, to make sure that they know how to use the tanks from a tactical point of view”.
But Lt Gen Leakey added: “The tanks themselves will not make a difference, except defensively for the moment. A hundred or so tanks is not going to give the Ukrainian army the decisive offensive capability, which they need. “Tanks on their own in small numbers are a huge help in defence because they’re mobile. They have terrific firepower. They’ve got great flexibility to shift around in a defensive position.
“However, if you’re going to attack on the offense, then tanks need to be used in clout not dribble, and 100 will not be enough. “When the Russians invaded Ukraine, you may remember just over a year ago, the tanks were picked off by the Ukrainian army using handheld anti-tank weapons and and through artillery as well.
