Ukraine has reported a new wave of Russian missile strikes as blasts were heard in several cities, including Kyiv. Retired Air Vice-Marshal Sean Bell says the attacks appear to be targeting critical energy infrastructure. Latest: 📺 Sky 501 and YouTube

Live reporting by Faith Ridler. Updates from Neville Lazarus and Yousra Elbagir in Kyiv, and Diana Magnay in MoscowSean Bell, Retired Air Vice-Marshal, has told Sky News that there are a number of potential reasons for the renewed Russian bombardment today - but it's impossible to understand without"getting inside Putin's head".

Mr Bell gave two potential reasons for the renewed strikes, including as revenge for the US confirming it will send Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine."One is that Russia has militarily stalled on the ground and is desperately keen to distract the Ukrainians from their war effort. Of course, by attacking energy infrastructure – the weather's not very nice here in the UK but it is fearsomely cold in Ukraine.

"I think Russia will be keen to make whatever impact it can before the arrival of that Western military system."Power losses have been confirmed in the Ukrainian capital in the last few minutes, with the city's mayor saying 40% of Kyiv is without electricity. He said:"40% of the capital's consumers are without electricity after the missile attack. In connection with the necessary safety measures used by power workers during an air alert.

"Russian media reported that uncrewed aerial vehicles were responsible for the strike on the facility, one of the main operating bases of Russia's strategic bomber fleet. In an update, Vitali Klitschko said:"According to preliminary information of the air defence forces, 15 missiles were destroyed over Kyiv."Three people were injured in the blasts, and at least two homes were damaged by the debris of an intercepted rocket.Regional leader Maksym Marchenko said missile fragments had fallen on a residential building, but no injuries were reported. It was also reported that missiles were intercepted in the north eastern Sumy region.

Explosions have been reported in numerous regions today, with three injuries confirmed in Kyiv - and Ukrainian authorities warning of power outages. The map below details the situation on the ground at the moment...Further details are emerging from the Ukrainian capital in the wake of this morning's strikes.
