The combination of a long war and continued refuge is starting to reshape the lives of some children who left, in ways that one parent never could have imagined.

According to the United Nations, nearly five million Ukrainians have fled the war to Europe. For Verdiev, like so many others, it was hoped the move would only be temporary. But after 11 months of fighting, he's getting used to not being able to see his children grow up.“My family are still in Poland, they’re safe,” he says, affirming the rationale behind his family's continued separation.
"Thankfully he understands that there is a reason that his daddy is in Kyiv and he has to stay in a different country with his mom and little brother. And sometimes he tells me that he wants to help me and that he needs me and he wants his daddy back."
