Since its invasion of Ukraine, Russia has mobilised more than 300,000 men and claims it has lost 6,000 soldiers - though Western intelligence suggests it's more. One year on, Sky News delves into the lives of ordinary Russians living on the home front 👉

The face is unsmiling. Dark eyes under thick brows, head closely shaven. He wears the uniform of the Russian paratroopers. In the portrait etched onto his gravestone, Vladislav Kokorin looks older than his 20 years.

When Kokorin was killed, Russia's president was still dreaming of rapid victory. This cemetery, and all those like it, on the outskirts of hundreds - if not thousands - of settlements across Russia's vast expanse, speak to just how wrong he was.Dressed in fur and a traditional white lace shawl, Ekaterina Kolotovkina is a vision of cold, patriotic fury. She is the wife of a military commander. She looks, and sounds, the part. "The West united against us.

The grief coursing through Ekaterina's home city has only reinforced her conviction that the West is the ultimate enemy. She has set up a foundation to send food, clothes and medicines to those at the front. Russia's president sweeps into the room, smiles and pulls up a chair. This is the man who has kept his most senior officials at the other end of a long table since the early days of the pandemic.

"The important thing is that we are all mortal. We are all at the Lord's mercy and we will all leave this world one day," the president says sagely. On September 21 2022, Vladimir Putin announced a 'partial' mobilisation of 300,000 reservists to bolster its depleted forces, a move that proved wildly unpopular.

Under Russian law, it is illegal for conscripts to serve on foreign soil. Olga called all the numbers she could and said there was no way he was going. It seemed to work but she grew interested in the scale of the violations around mobilisation. In her video, Olga appealed to other wives and mothers with similar concerns to band together and pressure the authorities.
