Ukraine repelled four Russian cruise missiles fired from strategic bombers overnight, the country’s air force said. The missiles, which were headed toward Kyiv, were downed without causing serious injuries or extensive damage, the capital’s military administration said. A drone hit an apartment block overnight in the Russian city of Kursk, north of the Ukrainian border, causing damaging including smashed windows. A second drone was taken down over Bryansk.
Three Ukrainian military pilots, including Andrii Pilshchykov, a decorated flying ace known by the call-sign “Juice,” were killed in a midair collision of two L-39 combat training aircraft on Friday, the defense ministry said. The state bureau of investigation is probing the cause of the crash in the Zhytomyr region, which comes as Kyiv’s pilots are set to start training with allies on advanced F-16 jet fighters.
Skirmishes have taken place recently between maritime and air forces around strategically important gas and oil platforms between Crimea and Odesa, the UK defense ministry said. Last week, a Russian combat jet shot at a Ukrainian military small boat operating near a platform in the northwest of the sea, it added. Ukraine said Saturday that Russia’s navy has shifted some of its missile carriers to the Azov Sea and is shelling targets in Odesa and Mykolaiv from there.
