The National Cyber Security Centre said it could not comment on “operational matters”, but it is understood it is working with Government departments, regulators, the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure and the private sector to help improve the security and resilience of the UK’s critical national infrastructure.
The UK’s Critical Infrastructure is defined by the Government as: “Those critical elements of Infrastructure , the loss or compromise of which would result in major detrimental impact on the availability, delivery or integrity of essential services, leading to severe economic or social consequences or to loss of life.”
Russia is understood to have used its war in Ukraine to trial cyber attacks that it intends to then use on nations such as the UK and US. “Cyber Operations are really only one side of the coin,” said Ms Wilkinson. “The other side of the coin is disinformation. And if we’re thinking about the likelihood of a Russian attack on critical national infrastructure, it’s so important to merge those two perspectives.
