UK counter-terror strategy to be reviewed amid rise of ‘self-initiated’ terror and online hate

The review is in response to ever-changing threats in the UK and abroad, with a shift towards terrorists operating independently from organised groups with increasingly personal ideologies

homegrown terrorism including the Manchester Arena bombing in 2017.

Such attacks have highlighted the threat posed by individuals who have been radicalised online or through other means outside of traditional extremist networks. The Government plans to step up its efforts to counter online hate speech and other dangerous ideologies that can spread quickly and easily through social media platforms.

Head of Counter Terrorism Policing, Matt Jukes said: “Today’s threat is dominated by increasingly fragmented ideologies, self-initiated terrorism, and the reach of hateful online ideologies into the lives of the young people. “It is vital that any future strategy reflects these learnings and also looks forward to the collaborations we will need in the future to keep people safe.”
