UH Downtown faces lawsuit over former business school dean's allegedly racist, homophobic comments
Charles Gengler stepped down in March as dean of the Marilyn Davies College of Business, university officials confirmed on Thursday. The school and UH System now face a federal lawsuit related to the former dean, who is accused of making a range of discriminatory comments including one in which he allegedly said that a certain Black employee committed an on-campus assault because he “fit the description” issued by police.
While Gengler was not named as a defendant in the suit, personal counsel Alfonso Kennard flatly denied the accusations. University of Houston Downtown officials said they also disagree with and will vigorously defend the assertions made by the employee, who still works at the institution. The employee who sued the university – who asked not to be named by the Houston Chronicle – said he encountered almost immediate racial discrimination and homophobia when he began working at the downtown campus in September 2021. He is a Black, gay man.
Gengler also made homophobic remarks and jokes to the employee, including in front of a prospective student, the lawyers said. UHD spokeswoman Marie Jacinto said she could not comment on any specific Title IX cases, which are heavily protected under federal law. In a faculty climate survey, half of the respondents rated the dean as having “poor” performance. In answer to a question about the challenges to carrying out their jobs, one faculty member said the dean was practicing discrimination and another said he was “actively targeting faculty.”
