He was on a paddleboard in the San Juan Rapids stretch of the river when he jumped in to help two women.

The man who drowned in the American River while trying to while trying to rescue two people in distress was a fourth-year medical student at the University of California, Davis, the school said.Crane had organized a student outing on Friday, July 29, at the American River in Fair Oaks. He was on a paddleboard in the San Juan Rapids stretch of the river when he jumped in to help two women who were struggling in the water after their inflatable tubes were swept into the rapids.

His body was recovered Saturday downstream, officials with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said. He was not wearing a life jacket.He received an undergraduate biochemistry degree in 2019 from California State University, Chico. During his time there, he worked as a tutor and research assistant, at the campus gym and as a security guard at a bar.

He spent five years in the Navy, having joined straight out of high school in 2010. He was a hospital corpsman and also did disaster relief work after the devastating Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
