Success has brought Uber loyal customers, but also bitter enemies. Car-sharing startup Turo, which has attracted the ire of U.S. auto rental firm Enterprise, shows it’s a problem for other disruptors too, writes GinaChon.
London on Nov. 25 stripped Uber Technologies’ license to carry paying passengers in the city for the second time in just over two years. The city cited a"pattern of failures" on safety and security though Uber can continue to operate pending an appeal.
Separately on Nov. 5, residents of the U.S. town of Jersey City, New Jersey voted for stricter regulations on short-term rentals. The rules had been opposed by holiday-rental firm Airbnb. The new rules largely prohibit homeowners from renting a property on a short-term basis if they do not live in it.
Local governments have also been tied up with debates over how to regulate services like Turo, which lets vehicle owners rent out their cars for short periods. California is among the state legislatures that are considering bills that would treat such companies differently from the car-rental industry.
