UAF returns to pre-pandemic normalcy for 101st commencement in 2023.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - For the 101st commencement, the University of Alaska Fairbanks returned to a more traditional graduation ceremony after years of modified commencement ceremonies.
Since 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic caused disruptions to social gatherings worldwide, UAF has held modified graduation ceremonies in different departments and for some none at all. For the first time in three years, the flagship university in the UA system returned to a more traditional ceremony which was held Saturday, May 5 at the Carlson Center.
All schools and departments were present at the ceremony with doctoral, masters and baccalaureate degrees being conferred. 1088 degrees were awarded to 1023 students. 18 retiring staff and faculty members were granted emeritus status, the title given only to those who served the university for at least ten years.
“I’ve seen resilience and perseverance in action...I’ve seen professors, instructors working one on one to help students clear that final hurdle to get to graduation. It’s thrilling to see the smiles, excitement and the relief on your faces as you celebrate this accomplishment,” said Paul Layer the Vice President of academics, students and research.
