SYDNEY — The queen of Cape Breton cinema is premiering her latest critically acclaimed feature film at home.
"Queens of the Qing Dynasty," directed by Ashley McKenzie, will make its Cape Breton debut at the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay on Wednesday. There will be a second screening at the Savoy on Thursday and another in Baddeck on March 18 as part of the Bad Bouy Film Festival.
It is McKenzie's second feature film and like her first,"Werewolf" , it was received on the festival circuit. Along with rave reviews from film critics and festival panels,"Queens of the Qing Dynasty" won multiple awards including Best Atlantic Director at the FINN Atlantic Film Festival in Halifax. An's character was also inspired by a real person, Ziyin Zheng, an international student from China who lived next door to McKenzie.
"I knew they had performance instincts and we're starting to dabble in that a little bit, but I was just really hoping that when it came time for me to do camera tests … that it was gonna feel good because it would have been hard to cast anyone."
