The White House estimates that, just since December, Russia has suffered 100,000 casualties.
In what has become a grinding war of attrition, the fiercest battles have been in the eastern Donetsk region, where Russia is struggling to encircle the city of Bakhmut in the face of a dogged Ukrainian defense.
Wedged between Moldova and Ukraine, the breakaway republic of Transnistria holds fast to its Russian roots but wants to stay out of the war on Ukraine. The White House has repeatedly sought to highlight the cost — both human and weaponry — to Russia of Bakhmut, which it argues has limited strategic importance to the overall trajectory of the war.
