Key details: The number of people already collecting jobless benefits fell by 37,000 to 1.65 million. That number has been slowly trending higher since last May, when it hit 1.31 million.“The trend right now is low and flat but we expect claims to rise sharply in the spring, lagging the surge in layoff announcements,” said Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon, ahead of the data.
Market reaction: Stocks DJIA SPX were set to open higher on Thursday. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note TMUBMUSD10Y rose to 3.96% on talk of a more aggressive Fed.
