Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps seized a British-flagged tanker, the Stena Impero, in the Straits of Hormuz on July 20 over alleged maritime violations but was viewed widely as a move to pressure London to fasten the release of the Grace 1.
The detention of the Grace 1 follows ratcheting tensions between Washington and Tehran after the Trump administration withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Attacks on two oil tankers in the Straits of Hormuz, a crucial shipping channel for oil exports, and the U.S. downing of an Iranian drone spooked energy markets in July.
