The funds will be distributed among 15 projects in 17 states and the Red Lake Nation

Batteries are increasingly being used to store surplus renewable energy so that it can be used later, during times when there is no sunlight or wind. The department says the projects will protect more communities from blackouts and make energy more reliable and affordable.

Storage that can keep putting out energy from sundown to sun up, or for several overcast days at a time, is the fervent work of thousands of engineers around the world right now because it’s a serious way to address climate change, by allowing natural gas or coal-fired power plants to turn off. “Regions where solar power and wind power are growing rapidly are often the most interested in long-duration storage. In the U.S., we see a lot of interest in this technology coming from places like California, New York and Hawaii,” said Amanda Smith, a senior scientist at Project Drawdown, a group that publicizes actions that can be taken to address the climate disruption that has already touched large swaths of the planet.

The Second Life Smart Systems initiative with sites in Georgia, California, South Carolina and Louisiana will use old, but still potent electric vehicle batteries for backup power for senior centres, affordable housing complexes, and EV chargers.

Biden administration outlines massive opportunities for clean energyBiden administration outlines massive opportunities for clean energyClean energy investment is a top priority for the Biden administration. With concerns surrounding the United Auto Workers’ (UAW) strike and oil prices reaching as high as $100 per barrel, discussions surrounding clean energy and vehicle electrification are becoming more prevalent. White House National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi sits down with Yahoo Finance’s Akiko Fujita to explain the current progress the Biden administration is making in clean energy investments “We’ve got to invest in those workers and we’ve got to bring them into this broad supply chain,” Zaidi says, addressing auto workers’ concerns over being replaced by automation. “We have an opportunity to not just deliver the product but have this be a moment of uplift for workers in the American middle-class.” When asked about a shift in public declarations from businesses’ commitment to clean energy investment, Zaidi said “smart money is still chasing climate change solutions”. Zaidi confirms the Biden Administration’s devotion to energy transitions by stating “$240 billion of capital has been committed to expanding clean energy deployment and manufacturing here in the United States, 100 new factories and counting…” since the Inflation Reduction Act’s signing. Nuclear energy: The company trying to modernize nuclear fuelNuclear energy: The company trying to modernize nuclear fuelWind and solar power continue to be the most favorable forms of alternative energy for Americans, with 82 percent favoring solar power and 75 percent favoring wind power, according to the Pew Research Center. Similarly, nuclear energy is growing in popularity as well, with Pew finding 57 percent of Americans favoring the energy replacement, up from 43 percent in 2020. Lightbridge Corporation (LTBR) CEO Seth Grae joins Yahoo Finance Live to discuss how the company is trying to modernize nuclear fuel.  Grae states that “Lightbridge has reimagined how to design nuclear fuel from scratch using modern technology, modern metallurgy, using a very different approach,” which makes it “cooler in the reactor… while producing even more power.”  Grae notes, as the survey shows, “there’s tremendous support for new nuclear power and that's partly for climate reasons, it's partly for energy security reasons.” For more expert insight and the latest market action, click here to watch this full episode of Yahoo Finance Live.
