Americans crush Canada at World Cup qualifier
The U.S. squad needed only five innings to trounce their Canadian hosts 23-0 on Thursday night as the Pool A event shifted from Baseball Central to Port Arthur Stadium.The Americans twice put up double digit runs in separate innings, scoring 10 in the fourth and 10 more in the fifth to hand Canada its first loss of the five-day event.
Kelsie Whitmore and Olivia Pichardo homered for the United States, while Ashton Lansdell drove in four out of the leadoff spot, going 2-four-4 with a walk. Pichardo also finished with four RBI, while Whitmore and Naomi Ryan drove in three apiece for the unbeaten U.S. squad. Ela Day-Bedard had two hits in two trips the plate for Canada, who got 3.1 innings out of starter Marylena Florio. Florio gave up six runs, four of them earned, on five hits and two walks.
Jillian Albayati went the distance for the U.S., allowing just three hits and two walks before the game was called after the fifth.
