The rift between the U.S. and Turkey has widened, becoming a new test for NATO cohesiveness
WASHINGTON—The NATO alliance faced a fresh test as the U.S. and Turkey traded threats on Wednesday over Ankara’s plan to buy a Russian air-defense system, escalating a long-simmering standoff.
Vice President Mike Pence, speaking at a forum to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, said that Turkey had to choose between the Russian deal and its role as a critical partner in the alliance, calling the air-defense deal a “reckless decision.”
