China and U.S. defense chiefs trade barbs at Asia's leading defense summit after Beijing rejects meeting offer.

The episode Saturday occurred while the U.S. and Canadian navies were conducting "a routine south to north Taiwan Strait transit June 3 through waters where high seas freedoms of navigation and overflight apply," according to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.

Austin held bilateral meetings with leaders from host Singapore, as well as Malaysia and Indonesia. There were also multilateral meetings with defense leaders from Australia, Japan and South Korea and other Southeast Asian countries. Without referring to the U.S., Li said: "Some big power [continues] to promote its so-called Indo-Pacific strategy."
