Village and its residents are suing railways and various government entities in two lawsuit

They are seeking these damages from CN and CP, Transport Canada, the attorneys general of Canada and of B.C., the B.C. Forests Ministry, seven unnamed companies that either built the railway or operated it under contract for the rail companies and two unnamed people, John Doe No. 1 and 2.

It also alleges the railways were negligent or at fault because they hadn’t clears the area around the tracks of organic material and other fuel sources. It says the village has incurred other costs clearing debris, the loss of rental or lease income and extra expenses to carry out its administration and operations at alternative locations, but alleges the Municipal Insurance Association has not paid out on the policy.

It seeks general and special damages and costs related to everything from the emergency response to the investigation of the fire’s cause and the rebuilding of the village. But the lawsuit alleges CN failed to prevent an “unreasonable risk that the train would ignite the surrounding combustibles … either by means of sparks or other incendiary materials.”
